Did you know?

  • Did you know that there are over 1.1 million Australians living with a communication disorder? That equates to about 5% of Australia’s ever-growing population.
  • Communication disorders may include difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice.
  • These disorders can have a significant impact on our emotional, physical, social, financial and vocational well-being. The earlier a disorder is diagnosed and treated, the better the person’s chance of improving and recovering will be.

Swallowing difficulties

Many medical conditions may cause problems with eating and drinking. If your swallowing difficulty is not managed correctly and in a timely manner, it may potentially lead to chest infections and other complications.

We can assess your swallowing and recommend dietary modifications and exercises to strengthen your oral muscles, making swallowing food and fluids easier.

Signs of swallowing difficulty may include:

  • Coughing during or after eating
  • Wet gurgly voice during meal time
  • Extra effort and time required to chew
  • Food and/or fluid leaking from the mouth
  • Food getting "stuck" in the mouth

Through communication with each other and our surroundings, we are able to experience the world. Communication helps us learn to express ourselves, live daily and to build relationships.
